The morning of June 15th was extremely busy for the Volunteers of Potomac Heights. At 0630, 6 members left the station in the Fire Boat and the EMS Utility to provide coverage for a triathlon that was taking place at Smallwood State Park. While that event was being covered, the station was alerted for the motor vehicle accident on Hawthorne Rd. in the area of the bike trail. Engine 73, Ambulance 78 and Chief 7B responded and found a two car accident with 1 person trapped and 3 additional trauma patients. Units worked with Rescue Engine 113 and Rescue Squad 8 to free the trapped occupant. Engine 72 was also alerted to set up the landing site for two helicopters on Hawthorne Rd. with Engine 201. All patients were flown to local trauma centers for treatment. Once returning from the accident, our ambulances ran 3 additional calls and at one point all 3 EMS resources from our station were serving the citizens.
